Croquet – a simple guide
We offer both Association Croquet and Golf Croquet which are two popular forms of croquet, each with its own style of play and strategy.
- Association Croquet is the traditional version of the game, focused on tactical play, precise ball control, and advanced strategy. Players score points by running hoops in a set sequence and can earn extra shots by hitting other balls, allowing for longer, more complex turns.
- Golf Croquet is a simpler and faster-paced version that is easier for beginners to learn. All players compete for the same hoop at the same time, with one point awarded for each hoop won. The emphasis is on accuracy, positioning, and tactical shot-making in a shorter format. This is the game that is outlined below.
Croquet is usually played as Singles – 2 players with 2 balls each or Doubles – 4 players with 1 ball each. Players take one stroke per turn. After everyone has played once, the sequence repeats.
To start the game, players begin from the designated starting area and play follows a colour sequence, usually, Blue; Red; Black; Yellow.
One point is scored when a ball passes completely through the correct hoop in the right direction. After a hoop is scored, the next hoop becomes the target. If a ball goes out of bounds, it is placed back on the boundary line where it crossed and the ball must pass fully through the hoop from the correct side to count.
Players may knock an opponent’s ball away from the hoop, position their own ball advantageously or use another ball to help your position.
The game is won by either the first side to score the required number of hoops, or the side with the most hoops when the allotted time ends.
Tips for beginners:
- Accuracy is usually more important than power
- Positioning your ball near the next hoop is key
- Defensive shots are an important part of the game
